The Future of Poomsae: Objective Scoring via Wearable Sensors?

Subjective judging has plagued Poomsae for decades. Is the future of the sport hidden in AI and wearable 3D-tracking sensors? We analyze the upcoming technological revolution.

The Future of Poomsae: Objective Scoring via Wearable Sensors?

The Problem with Human Eyes

We discussed the politics of subjective judging in a previous article. No matter how many seminars World Taekwondo holds, a human judge sitting at a table cannot simultaneously evaluate the precision of a 4-inch stance width error, a 10-degree hip angle deviation, and a 0.2-second rhythm delay in real-time.

To push Poomsae toward absolute Olympic legitimacy (like Kyorugi electronic scoring did in 2012), governing bodies are quietly developing the holy grail of forms competition: Objective AI Sensor Scoring.

"If we can track a baseball pitch down to the millimeter at 100 miles per hour, we can track a Taekwondo punch."

How Wearable Tech Could Work

The proposed systems do not rely on external cameras, which can be blocked by the athlete's own body. Instead, they utilize microscopic, lightweight gyroscopic and accelerometer sensors interwoven into a specialized "Smart Dobok."

  • Absolute Accuracy Metrics: The sensors map the athlete's skeletal structure in 3D space. The AI system holds the "perfect" blueprint of Taegeuk 8. If an athlete's front kick reaches 85 degrees instead of the required 90 degrees, the software instantly issues a 0.1 deduction. It removes human bias completely.
  • Measuring True Power: Presentation (Speed and Power) would no longer be a subjective guess based on Dobok snaps. Accelerometers at the wrists and ankles would objectively measure the peak velocity (G-force) of a strike and the exact deceleration speed of the lockout.
  • Synchronization Perfection: In Team Poomsae, the AI would measure the exact millisecond differential between the three athletes' movements, objectively grading their synchronization without being fooled by visual perspective tricks.

The Pushback from Purists

The implementation of such technology faces massive resistance from traditionalists. The argument is that Poomsae is an "art" and art cannot be judged purely by numbers. If an algorithm marks you down for a 1cm deviation, does it drain the soul and "martial spirit" out of the performance?

Furthermore, there is the issue of anthropometrics. If a purely objective system is used, does it favor a specific body type? The software must be advanced enough to dynamically scale its mathematical requirements based on the individual athlete's limb length and joint structure.

Conclusion

While still in the prototyping phase, algorithmic Poomsae scoring is an inevitability. It promises to eradicate political bias and judging errors, forcing athletes to confront the absolute, objective mathematical reality of their technique. The future of Poomsae is digital.
