The Silicon Judge: How Artificial Intelligence will Scoret Poomsae

World Taekwondo is currently testing AI cameras capable of judging Poomsae without human bias. We explore the terrifying accuracy and geometric algorithms of the future.

The Silicon Judge: How Artificial Intelligence will Scoret Poomsae

The End of Human Bias

For as long as Poomsae has existed as a sport, it has been plagued by the inherent flaws of human perception. A judge blinking at the wrong millisecond can cost an athlete a World Championship. But what happens when the judge never blinks?

World Taekwondo (WT) is quietly partnering with tech firms to develop AI-driven camera systems capable of judging Poomsae in real-time. This is not science fiction; it is currently being beta-tested.

"An AI does not care what country you are from, what Dojang you train at, or how loud your Kihap is. It only sees geometry."

How the Algorithm Sees

The AI judging system relies on a technology called Markerless Pose Estimation. Multiple high-speed cameras are positioned around the mat. As the athlete moves, the AI mapping software places an invisible "skeleton" over their body, tracking 33 specific kinetic joints (ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, wrists) at 120 frames per second.

The AI compares the athlete's real-time skeletal geometry against a pre-programmed standard of "Absolute Perfection."

  • Stance Width: The AI mathematically calculates the distance between the athlete's heel sensors. If a Front Stance (Ap Kubi) is supposed to be 4.5 foot-lengths long, and the athlete's is 4.2, the AI instantly deducts 0.1 points.
  • Center of Gravity: The AI tracks the vertical oscillation of the athlete's hips. If the hips bounce during a transition where they are supposed to remain level, the deduction is automatic.
  • Terminal Velocity: The AI calculates the exact speed at which a punch accelerates and the abruptness of the lock-out (the "snap"). It generates an objective "Power Score" based on kinetic physics, not loud screaming.

The Controversy of Perfection

While the elimination of bias sounds ideal, the alpha testing of these systems has terrified coaches. When tested on actual World Champions, the AI repeatedly gave them shockingly low scores. Why? Because human judges forgive micro-errors to reward "overall presentation." The AI forgives nothing. It is a merciless mathematician.

Conclusion

If fully implemented, AI judging will force athletes to train like programmable androids. The era of the "artistic" Poomsae performance will die, replaced by an era of terrifying, machine-grade geometric perfection.
